Okay, since most complaints on here have been so vague, I will set the record straight. I responded to a Craigslist ad through email and within a few hours, a Ms. Ferris had called to set up an interview with herself. She stressed the job as being more customer service than security where I would sit at a desk in a lobby, sign people in and answer phones and monitor cameras. She told me to bring a resume and %75 for a background check if hired. I show up for the interview where I see a crowded lobby full of applicants. I sign in and soon go into Ms. Ferris' office. It seems like a normal interview and we even negotiate my wage. She tells me I need to pay an additional $424 for security classes and that once completed I will get placed at a job site, interview with them, and make $16/hr. I negotiate to pay "only" an extra $349 and take the classes. When I go to get placed I am simply given a hand-written list of 3 security companies I can apply to (but with dozens just like me, the odds of getting hired are LOW). In summary I paid a third party (aka scamming security placement "company") twice what the security classes were worth, and yes I researched that assertion. Lastly, places like these are common in NYC I've been told several times so beware all around.
