This company has personal information and claims to have purchased an old credit card debt. I don't really recall the card they claim I owe on, and I immediately suspected fraud because this is apparently something from 2001 and in my state the Statute of Limitations on credit card debt is only three years, so it certainly seemed odd.
But I played along and they tried to get me to settle with a combination of "I"m doing you a favor" and threats to sue me in court. He made it sound like he had a lawyer holding a summons just waiting to run down to the courthouse. The guy I talked to gave his name as David Ross. I played stupid and would call back asking for more information from him as my reservations grew.
I researched state law and called him back again to tell him that something didn't sound right, especially given the state law on statute of limitations. He tried to tell me that his company had "revived" the debt buy buying it, but that is legally incorrect and he knew it because when I pressed him he became angry and said he was going to tack on "fraud" to the legal papers. Big whoop.
The "agreement" he sent me was signed by an Ashley Miller in a very unprofessional font. He told me this was his paralegal, and that this emailed document would be enough proof, and that I needed to sign it and send it back to him. He did not like it when I pointed out to him that there was nothing at all protecting me in this agreement. He would have something from me, but I would have nothing from his company asserting that I'd even paid them a dime. From what I've read, people who have sent in money couldn't get a single response from them to verify. Not cool.
My verdict: These people are not legit, and the more I read (they have a "F" rating and are not accredited by the BBB) the more I smelled a rat. I'll be calling the state department of commerce tomorrow to tell them about my reservations.
My big question now is how these people are getting my personal information, and my concern is what they may do with it.
