I contacted the owner through the VRBO web site about a vacation property VRBO # 287557. I received information about the house and a contract. The fees were sent via wire transfer. Now the owner, Melanie Cava, denies the reservation and refuses to communicate with us.

- I am Melanie Cava the property owner. James believes he contacted me for a booking through the VRBO website but unfortunately he did not and was defrauded by someone saying they were me. VRBO is an independent website that I pay to list my properties. They have a rental guarantee for reservations booked through their site, subject to following standard payment procedures, which are clearly posted on the website. James contacted VRBO to complain that he had been defrauded and VRBO explained to me that he wired cash via Western Union to a foreign account. This is not an acceptable method of payment, as most people who do business on the internet know. Therefore VRBO did not honor their rental guarantee and James lost his money. In VRBO's defense, their website posts in several places, a warning to follow standard payment processes and explicitly warn against paying via Western Union. It is too bad that this happened to him, but I never received his reservation request nor his money. I am not responsible for honoring his rental or returning his money. I have been in the vacation rental business for over 10 years and have been listed on VRBO this entire time. They are a reputable vacation rental site and and if I had a history of what James is purporting, they would not do business with me, nor I with them. In addition, over this 10 year period there is not a single other complaint of this nature. It is my hope that my response will prevent other people from being defrauded in this way. Never pay via Western Union to a foreign account on the internet and always call the individual's number listed on the website before wiring money (which is also recommended on the VRBO website)
