A couple months ago I got a call from Clearview Electric company regarding my electric rate. A female representative was talking so fast and I was clearly not one hundred percent followed. From the whole conversation what I had got were: 1st, they can drop my electric rate; 2nd, there is no obligation to use it and I can cancel it anytime. So I thought there was no harm trying it so I agreed.
But soon after that I found out my electric bill went extremely high and the reason is: Clearview, Inc did not lower my rate, instead, it gave me a higher rate than what I had before. I was using 0.05/ KWh and now I have 0.07/Kwh. That's 40% more!!!
Due to that reason, I canceled their service by calling them. During the cancellation process, the representative didn't bring anything about early termination fee, she just agreed to stop my service with no hesitation. But after that, I kept receiving letters from Clearview asking for $125 (12.5 per months) termination fee. So I called them back and they said that was what I agreed with and they have the phone call record to prove it. Yes, there maybe a chance I didn't pay attention during the phone call but since they said they can drop my electric rate but they increased my rate instead, I think I should not pay the termination fee to such a fraud. In fact, I should ask them for the extra money I spent on electric the past two months. Apparently, that's how they make money and that's why they talk fast in the phone call and do not try to ask me to stay on their service when I was trying to cancel it. Because they knew they are going to charge me for the early termination fee.
I should be more careful when I receive such kind of calls. And here, I share my story to everyone so hopefully we won't be cheated in such ways any more.

  • You are not the only one who does not pay attention to what is being said during the third-party verification call. I work for the company that does third-party verification for Clearview and other energy supply companies. Many people do not realize that they are actually enrolling while on the phone or are lead to believe that they are taking a survey. Unfortunately, yes, they do have you on audio answering that you agree to their terms and I know that there is nothing in your oral contract concerning early termination fees. I'm sorry you had to learn this lesson the hard way. Others learn from his mistake and take heed! This company is unscrupulous and preys on the elderly and those with English as their second language. The agents also have been known to impersonate customers during the third-party enrollment process. I hope to bring awareness to this problem.
