Wife ordered two 'weight-loss products' at 'trial order' price of only $5.95 each for shipping. Purpose was to get credit card number, fine print supposedly says somewhere that if you do not call within 14 days, they will charge full price of $79.95 each on the credit card, and continue monthly orders until called to stop. So wife missed the fine print, and $320.00 on the credit card bill before we got the statement and saw it. So, assuming the foine print exists, it is technically not illegal, but definitely not ethical.

  • The "fine print" is on the packing slip that comes with the "free sample," not on the website that sold the product. Who reads all that stuff on a packing slip? No, that's not legal. That website was taken down by the time I found out what was going on. Informing you by mail of a change in your contract, after you have agreed to the terms and given your credit information, is not legal. Changing a written contract must be agreed to by both parties. Imagine what a mess we would be in if anyone could just mail you a letter and say that the price has gone up and we're charging you $20 more if we don't hear from you within 24 hours? Insist that your credit card company report this as fraud and they should refund your money.
