I was just called by a man w/ a heavy accent advising me that I had been selected to receive an 8K US grant due to my promt payment of income taxes and lack of ever filing for bankruptcy. Right away I knew this was a scam for 2 reasons, the first was that I am disabled and am not required to pay income taxes, so I have not done so in over a decade. The second is that I had to file bankruptcy many years ago! This is the second of this type of call I have received in less than 2 days. I wanted to get more info on how they executed their con, so I asked some more questions. I told him that I certainly didn't get selected for the reasons he mentioned for the above noted reasons and he then came up with "you were selected b/c you have no criminal history", what a joke. When I inquired about how I would recieve the money I knew he would say he could put it on my credit card if I gave him the number, which of course he did. When I reminded him that I did not have any credit cards he then said Western Union, but he would have to verify some info first, not surprisingly! I expected the first question to be my ss# but he blurted out an address from many years ago and asked me to verify it. I have moved 3 times since then,so
I told him he was never to call me again and that I would be reporting him. These people are everywhere, using every possible scheme, online, phone, mail and in person. Please beware and do not give out any personal information to anyone unless you know exactly who they are. This person used a phone number from Montgomery, AL. The person who contacted me on Sat night contacted me from a number with the area code of 235, which isn't even a real area code. People use spoofing software so their numbers can't be traced. Please be careful.
