I recieved a scam text message indicating that I won $1000 gift card because my entry was selected. The text message went on to say I need to visit BestBuyContest.com in order to claim my prize. The text originated from phone number 714-616-6154.

I did NOT visit this website or call the number listed in the text message. I was immediately suspicious because I had no memory of entering any contest and furthermore, when you do win a contest, an affidavit sent via U.S. mail is mailed for tax purposes.

I immediately visited the authentic BestBuy.com website and discovered information on this scam. Further web research led me to this website, where it looks like dozens of people have been fraudulently contacted.

I sent Best Buy an email at [email protected] to report the incident and I suggest that any other consumer do the same.

  • This company needs to be found and sued in a class action lawsuit at once. I have a prepaid phone and their fraudulent text cost me money, in addition to the time I spent researching this fraud. While I recognized the fraud at once, it seems like many others were fooled into calling the fake number or visiting their fake website. This company needs to be taught a stern lesson that this behavior will not be tolerated.

  • I received the same text message on 27 October at 21:19. This is what it said exactly:

"Your entry last month has WON! Go to BestBuyContest.com and enter your winning code 6207 to claim your FREE $1000 BestBuy gift card within 24hrs."

Needless to say I did not. I will be also reporting this to Best Buy--thanks Colleen for the suggestion and email.
