On Sep-4 we responded to a craigslist adv. to sublet (Personal Information Removed) by Joshua Lee Brody (Josh Brody). He met us few blocks from the unit on Sep-7. He informed he was going to be out of country for 6 months from Nov-1 so he wanted to sublet his unit. He took us to the unit where we stayed for about 10 minutes. On Sep-10 we transferred $4180 to his Bank of America account.
On Oct-9 he told us unit is not available. We asked for our money back and he said he will mail the checks. On Oct-10 when we called him he said he had mailed the checks. When we didn’t get the checks by Oct-15 we called him again and he said he did not mail any checks, he has no money and we are free to go to the police. On Oct-16 we contacted the property manager of the property , she said Josh has no affiliation with the property and no authority to rent it. She advised we should report to the police. We filed Police complaint in Weehawken (our residence) and faxed to NYPD. Later it was revealed the guy has over 16 civil and small claims lawsuits against him in last 9 years.
Hoping to get our money back.

  • I too believe I was scammed by Josh Brody. In September I went to look at the apartment at 1 Astor Place and found it to be to my liking. I was told that Josh was moving his business to the west coast and wanted to sublet the apartment but hold onto it in case it didn't work out.

    He told me the apartment wasn't available until November 1, which I said was find and I then wired him $4600 for first month and security. I took pictures of the apartment, got his identification and signed a contract with him. Last week I texted him to make sure everything was good with the apartment and he responded that we were all set. I sent him a few texts yesterday and today and got no responses. I then called him but was sent to voicemail.

    I have called my bank and explained that I believe there was fraud and they are going to look into how to reverse the transfer. I am also going to file a police report tomorrow and I will speak with my lawyers tomorrow. I will get my money back.

    What really kills me is I've been living out of a suitcase for 18 months and ALL I wanted was a nice and comfortable home. This stress has pushed me over the edge.

  • Scambook removed the address that I had mentioned in the report, but the unit he showed us was also at 1 Astor Place, hence I am pretty certain we are duped by the same person. I am going to try convince NYPD that this a racket and they need to take action. If you want to join me in this complaint pls send me a note.

  • Anyone else who believes he has been scammed similarly by Josh pls. give reference to our complaints filed against him at Precinct 9, Precinct 14, NYPD and Weehawken Precinct NJPD, while registering your complaint.

  • Hi Ashu,

    I acutally just sent you an email, but I wanted to publicly document my experiences as well.

    I viewed the unit at One Astor Place on September 15th, and he informed me that he was relocating his business to LA. After speaking with Josh several times that week on the phone--as we firmed up details and negotiated our lease agreement--I paid him a deposit on September 22nd. By this point, I had been to the apartment twice and we had exchanged IDs (from him, a passport scan).

    This past week, on Oct. 17, I reached out to Josh about bringing a couple of friends by the apartment to see the unit. On Friday, Oct. 19, he called my cell phone and gave me the name of his attorney. I spoke to his lawyer--who he had retained only on the previous day--that afternoon. On Saturday, he called and volunteered that he had done this to about 10 different individuals.

    I would, of course, like to join in on any complaints in the works. Ashu, you now have my email address, so please keep me in the loop!

  • I too have been conned by this guy. I will be reporting to the police also at my earliest convenience. Do we know that Josh Brody is his real name? Do we know where he currently resides?

  • Updating the count-- Three more victims have contacted me over email and have been merged with our communication with the NYPD precinct 9 detective handling the case. Bringing the total of victims to 7 so far.

  • I too believe that I've allen for the same sublet scam and am now out a couple of thousand dollars. I'd like to join in filing the criminal complaint. Please let me know how I can get involved.

  • Hi, looks like I have bee scammed by Josh too and it sounds very similar to all of the above. I just visited 1 Astor place and the super told me he moved out 2 weeks ago. How do I join into the NYPD complaint?

  • Josh Brody is a sociopath in every sense of the word. I was involved in the same scam. Same apartment, same backstory. 1 Astor Place. My bank will not reverse the transfer of $4200. Josh Brody's lawyer gave me no reason to believe that I will get any of the money back. In NY state, misdemeanor fraud is a scheme to cheat more than 1 person but less than 10. Felony fraud is a scheme to cheat 10 or more people - and can include jail time. Josh Brody deserves nothing less. By my count there are at least 7 people. If there are others out there you should get involved, please. It was an exquisite scam by the way so don't feel too bad for falling for this fraudulent act. Just feel very angry and we can try to get some retribution.

  • I used to work for Josh several years ago. What happened with this case? Did he go to jail? I feel so awful for everyone who trusted him.
