Got a call from Card Monitoring Service on Tuesday (10/16/12) because of suspicious activity. Of several unknown charges (Walmart.com, Apple, Blockbuster.com, Newegg.com, Yahoo Wallet & Groupon - never visited any of these sites) over the past 2 weeks, there was one for "Family Safe Life". Immediately closed the account and disputed several charges that had already cleared.

Today I received a letter from Family Safe Life about my new membership in their "Identity Protection" program. Temporary login is an AOL email address that I've never seen before (haven't had an AOL address since the '90s).

Tried to call their 866-549-6428 number from their letterhead to find out they are only open 9-5 MT, Mon-Fri (It's 10pm my time right now).

For fun, tried to login to their site with temp login/password. Got "invalid userid/password" message.

So on face, it appears they got my name, address and credit card number, sent me a bogus letter with a made-up email & sign-on. Appears they hope I think it's junk mail and toss it so they could charge my card $20 month.

I find it rather ironic (or should I say preposterous) that a supposed Identity Theft firm is using stolen information to scam people. I will be taking this to our states Consumer Protection Agency and filing a complaint with the FTC. I will update with any follow-up.
