My daughter borrowed my car to go to Chicago in July. On 8/29 I get a letter in the mail, complete with a photo of my license plate informing me that I had 3 toll violations. One violation was for the IPO lane. I guess this lane is for people that pay ahead and just drive through. The other two are fines in the ORT lanes. Aren't these the lanes that have long lines of cars paying cash for the toll? The original tolls equal 1.90 but with the automatic fines of 20.00 for each violation the total is 61.90.
I used my scanner to enlarge the photo to 800% and a man's figure can be seen operating the camera. Aren't these toll booth cameras supposed to be automatic? If so, why is there a man there?
I have read online that the Chicago Tollway Department targets out of state vehicles because they generally just pay the fines without scheduling a hearing to contest the fines. Those folks that do request a hearing/evidence review seldom win. The hearing/evidence judge can only schedule another hearing to reduce, cancel or set up payment plans. Many hundreds or thousands of dollars later, you most likely will still have to pay the fines.
What can be done about this one?

  • Just wanna give you a heads up on a few things, 1) IPO is IPASS Only, and ORT is OPEN ROAD TOLLS. They are both for Ipass prepaid users only, the only difference is IPO is on exit and on ramps or at interchanges, ORT is the same thing except it's on the tollway and you travel at full highway speed through them, The lanes she should have stopped at are ACM (Automatic coin machine) MTL (Manual toll lanes) 2) All the lanes are Automatic camera's, No one is operating a camera, what ever you thought was a shadow isn't (or someone of no connection was illegally walking by the tollway, which wouldn't fully surprise me with some of the nuts out here) a person. 3rd I've worked for the tollway system and it's an equal treatment, they actually have more violations with Illinois drivers then any other, it's just a lot of the time Out of state drivers get these violations because they don't properly use the tollway and fail to get in the properly marked lanes to pay tolls and when they miss them they don't pay for them online before a notice is generated thus they then get fined.
