My mom rec'd a call one morning, from someone saying they sold insurance, and knew that she already had one long term insurance plan. He wanted to come see her to explain what he has to sell her. She signed a contract, debiting $125/Mth from her checking account, and that afternoon, when I stopped by to check on her, I noticed this paper on her counter. Asked her what it was, and she couldn't explain it, so I took the liberty of calling the salesman. He told me he was aware of the company she presently has her long term care with, and that she definitely needed more care. Did he know that she was previously diagnosed with Alzheimer's? Doubtful, but needless-to-say, he asked her to sign paperwork. I stayed in touch with the salesman regarding help for my mother and he said that the plan has to be in effect for 6 mths. at $125/mth. Six months later, I requested an aid for my mom. Now I was in touch with the "principal" of the company. It got to a point, where they weren't able to furnish any "aid" for my mother, that he offered to return 100% of her money. However, he told me to put the cancellation, in writing, and I did just that! I then received a letter back from the company, and they say that there's a 30 day cancellation policy, from the date of the original signature. If this company is taking advantage of my mother, at 87 years old, how many other elderly people are they doing it to? This is totally fraudulent and in my eyes, considered ELDERLY ABUSE!

  • My name is Charles Harris and I am the attorney for ASSI. The complaint is inaccurate and contains grossly misleading information.

First, ASSI is a Service Contract company, not an insurance company. ASSI routinely accepts members who suffer from Alzheimer’s and in fact did so with the member in question. The status of the member’s Alzheimer’s does not preclude her from receiving the benefits of membership. In this instance, as is the case in all new membership applications, a customer survey was prepared by the prospective member in the member’s own handwriting stating that she read the membership information, approved of the terms and benefits of membership and knew exactly what she was purchasing. ASSI works in addition to traditional Long Term Care and many of ASSI’s clients have both a LTC policy from a traditional insurance company and a True Freedom Service Contract from ASSI. The daughter’s complaints represent a fundamental misunderstanding of the True Freedom Service Contract which has important benefits for all ASSI’s members including those suffering from Alzheimer’s.
