2 weeks ago i won (easily - framed so i could win i believe) an auction for a phone. Too good to be true but it put in my visa details. Next minute they demanded visa copies and passport copies to be emailed to them before i get the phone. When i tried to get info i was put through to a Malta office. They said i had signed a platinum deal and had to pay $119 monthly (I think). I said i wanted to cancel as i hadnt signed up for anything before i entered the auction. I immediately cancelled my credit card before any more could be drawn out. I have had emails ever since which i am not replyint to now. I am going to ring Commerce Commission this week. They are online bullies and they have had so many complaints. Why are they still operating???

Update: 07/21/2012

  • this happened exactly to me a few days ago :( I have written to Fair Go and Target and cancelled my credit card. I emailed Ziinga and told them they were unfair and misleading and that I would not pay them a cent - now am waiting to see what will follow. Damned if I'm paying them $68 merely to cancel something I never joined knowingly!

  • This is what happened to me also.......asked them to cancel my account and then they proceeded to tell me about cancellation fee of $68 and if i didnt pay that i will be charged 119.90 a month of three months so i did try and pay the cancellation fee and it wouldnt process my card then they sent me a bank account and i thought no im not paying this, cancelled my card and i am getting emails saying they have sent bank account and please send receipt when it is paid. they are very deceiving and not clear at all i would never have dont it. These people are like robots as when you ring they say the same thing. They need to be stopped i was shocked when i googled this site to see all the complaints not just from NZ but all around the world. they are just money hunger and dont care that they scam so many people they must be taking a whole lot of people to collection agency as it looks like there are thousands of ppl who feel the same!

  • I too am receiving emails saying overdue account after I cancelled my credit card so they couldn't access it. I have reported it to Consumer Affairs and they have confirmed it is an online scam.

  • Hi Cinds,
    Here's what they said:

    Hi there
Thanks for your recent scam report to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs’ Scamwatch.
The scam you describe carries the hallmarks of a known scam. Information relating to this type of scam can be found on Scamwatch here: http://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/scams/scam-types/identity-theft-and-hacking-scams

    Helping protect others
Scamwatch exists as an education tool for consumers to learn about the types of scams that are around, so people can know the sort of tactics scammers use and be able to spot the signs of a scam.
By reporting this scam to us, you add to our collection of scam data and the information we hold about scams. While the Ministry of Consumer Affairs does not have any investigative or enforcement powers in relation to scams, we need consumers to tell us of their scam experiences, so we can alert – and help protect - others.
If we see a new scam, or a recurrence of an old scam, we can list a warning on the Alerts section of Scamwatch: http://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/scam-news/scam-alerts but we need people to make reports to us so we can keep tabs on the scammer’s activities. The information you have provided may help educate others to avoid scams in the future.
Once again, thank you for your report.

What I'm trying to do now is get their emails blocked from work. No way am I going to give them my credit card details for their "overdue account". I asked consumer affairs how to deal with the emails and they said there's not really a lot apart from spam filters. They also suggested going to www.netsafe.org who

  • Hi Fran thank you for these details. I have gone onto netsafe and hopefully have blocked them now from my email where if they send one it will go straight to delete it. I am really hoping i dont get a letter from a collection agency any time soon i dont need a bad credit rating because of there scamming!!! As we all dont. It also makes me wonder how they got a NZ phone number makes me wonder if i should ring telecom and see if it is through them and see if they can do anything about it!!

  • I thought about a possible colleciton agency letter - It might be worth you reporting your experiences to consumer affairs so you have a paper trail and have them confirm it's a scam - I don't know if debt collectors will collect on a scam? and one from overseas?

I've been researching this Ziinga thing and it looks like people who have had money taken from their account cannot get it back and never receive the item they paid for. I only lost $16.00 odd but from stories worldwide people have lost hundreds. I also emailed them asking for an invoice/statement and account number as I wouldn't give my credit card details again and no response, only "overdue account" emails.

I also read another July post whereby someone was going to contact Fair Go...

  • Wow, thanks for all that info. I am SO pleased i am not alone. I have got as far as reporting to Commerce Commission but have not heard back yet. My husband says to ignor it but my head cant!! I too want to get rid of the emails that keep coming into my junk mailbox. I have said to Ziinga that everything is in the hands of the Commerce Commission in NZ so will wait and see what they say. If you want to email me like Cinds my email is (Personal Information Removed)

  • You are certainly not alone. I thought I was alone in NZ as a lot of complaints are from either the UK, South Africa and countries where they are the Euro. A few from the USA as well.
I'm not sure if Fair Go would take it, maybe if enough of us put our stories forward they might? Afterall we were all duped into it..
The other thing I noticed is that on their emails they say "legally binding contract" - but under what law? international? I want to do some more research into it in case I've missed something.

  • here's great news ladies - Fair Go is featuring Ziinga tomorrow night! 7:30pm on TVONE. I for one will be glued to it! I am pretty convinced that I will not be chased by debt collectors. There are just too many people who are in the same situation as ourselves for them to ever bother following up on fairly small amounts. Rest easy I say. I lost $13 and that's all.

  • Hi Fran, will be interesting to hear what "legally binding contract" means if you can find that our. I would say its someting they have made up and has no power in NZ -maybe Maltest law!! Will be great to watch Ziinga on Fair Go on Wednesday. Hope you can.

  • Absolutely!! I'll be watching that alright.
Each day there's a new post on Scambook from others around the world who have just been scammed.
The one thing that got me which I didn't mention before is their paying method - it looks legit so it will be interesting to see what Fair Go find out about that too...
