I applied for the position of 'Vet Receptionist and Front Desk" on Craigslist and was pretty excited to receive an email within an hour saying that I was the most qualified candidate out of 25 people. The email asked that I sign up for a job career website before going any further with the hiring process, so I did. I didn't think it was a big deal because I've signed up for several hiring sites. However, when I tried to reply to that email, I got a return email stating that the email address that I was responding to had an incorrect domain name. The email address was: [email protected]. Yes, with the letter 'd' in the middle of 'jobmanager'. That was a little fishy to me, and I was also concerned that there was not a business listed with her email address; it simply said 'manager'. Manager of what!? When I tried to find her on LinkedIn, I was unsuccessful. I also couldn't find anything about the domain name on Google. I went back to the listing on Craigslist to try to see if I could find any other information, but the posting had already been deleted...within an hour! This is the email I received from her:

Hello,

We appreciate you e-mailing us and taking the time to send your resume. You appear more than experienced for our available position and more so than the additional 24 applicants we accepted resumes from. I am interested in taking the next phase with you. Before I am able to arrange a closing interview, most likely scheduled for next week, you are required to sign up to our site, this way all our potential employees are added to our job database for easy tracking, it is free and it only takes a minute to complete. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

The next day, I received ANOTHER email from someone completely different. This is the same email that many others on this site have received:

********************
I would like to thank you for taking the time to apply for our job position.

I am glad to hear from you. Lets go over the description requirements for the job. The following are some of the responsibilities you will have:

* Answering general phone calls for our department.
* Schedule appointments and coordinate customers.
* Handle bank deposits and outbound errands such as for company purchases.
* You will be responsible for a company fleet vehicle.
* You will also be responsible for one of our company credit cards in all official business.

After reviewing your resume, your qualifications are clear and I believe that you are better suited for this position than the other applications I received. I would like to begin the hiring process with you. Now, before I can schedule an interview, company policy dictates that you obtain a recent credit report (from past 2 business days). This policy was created ever since an issue we had with a few of our employees abusing the company credit card accounts.

I prefer and recommend you obtain your credit check here (Credit Report) since we have found them to be the most accurate and their service is free, however you are welcome to use any provider.

After you register with them, you will receive your report. Please do not send me the report via email since it has sensitive information. Instead, have a hard copy with you when we conduct your interview. Also, this report is just a formality and a low credit score will not disqualify you for the position, we will just discuss it together.

When you have obtained your report, email me your telephone number where I can contact you along with what day this week you would like me to schedule the interview on.

I am ready to fill this position this week and am looking forward to meeting with you.

Sincerely,
Victoria Sweet

Now I was really suspicious because none of those duties were consistent with what I believed a vet receptionist would do. Furthermore, the company title had nothing to do with any of the veterinary offices in my area. Although prior jobs have required a credit check, the company performed the check themselves; I didn't have to bring in my own copy. I did not enter any information into the website they linked me to. The whole thing seemed sketchy, so I am glad that I was able to find this website and see that several people got the same email as me, because now I know for certain that this is a scam.

  • I had the same email show up today, on a thursday, that stated the exact same thing as your first email. In researching it I found this site and your complaint. Thank you.
