Someone representing www.pcprosupport.com called our house while my daughter was home, told her that software on her PC reported a problem to "pcprosupport". They asked my daughter to log in to their website and download software to help clean up her computer. They then told her about all the thousands of problems with her PC...which is only a few months old. The rep said her PC was on the verge of being taken over by a virus and they needed to fix it NOW. They also tried to tell her that another PC in our house was infected by her PC...but there is absolutely NO connection, network or otherwise, between the two PCs. Only THEN did the pcprosupport rep tell my daughter that it would cost some large amount of money for them to do their job.

She wisely hung up on them.

They called back JUST NOW...I'm on the phone with them now..."Eric" (with a thick Indian accent) says he's a Microsoft certified engineer and wants to talk to my daughter....I ask him where he got her phone number...he say's it's registered with my daughters "Windows XP IP address" on "the internet server which controls the world wide web and contains all information for everybody" (seriously, he said that!)...I tell him that makes no sense...back and forth...he makes less sense with every word...he hands me off to some "tech manager"...he says a PC registered to my daughter, running "XP" contacted them for help. I asked him "which PC?" since there are several in the house. He gives me a bogus IP address and again says it's an XP machine.

Lots more back and forth happened and the guy was making up nonsensical network-sounding gibberish. I finally told him that the only PC in this house running XP is right in front of me, it's turned off, none of our PCs are registered to my daughter, and the phone number you called is not hers. Oh, and "I've been a professional software engineer for 30 years and not one of your sentences has made any sense. Can we start over with 'Please tell me, where did you get our phone number'?".

He hung up on me.

I'm afraid that the language they used was just technical-sounding enough to scare a non-tech person into believing them.

Sorry for the long post...I wasn't planning on them CALLING ME BACK in the middle of typing this!!

John
