  • Unfortunately, most scams are not recognizable as such in the actual ad. Most scammers are very professional in their actions. They use email addresses as well as IP addresses from the country in which they post, or copy and paste a text from another ad to ensure the language in the ad is as local as possible. But as soon as an interaction between the buyer and seller takes place, it becomes obvious that the person is a scammer and often in fact not from your country. The language is suddenly different and the person has countless excuses as to why you cannot view the item/pet in person and why they have to ship it to you. These are signs that only you, the Locanto user, can see. Our main goal therefore is to inform our users about potential scams and help them recognize and avoid fraud.

On Locanto, we inform our users about possible scams in 4 different ways:

    1) Every category page (for example "For Sale") has a safety message that is warning users to be careful when trading on Locanto.
    2) After clicking the "Contact Advertiser" button on an ad, an extended safety message appears with the most obvious indicators of scam (for example: Only trade locally, don't pay with Western Union to a different country, and more).
    3) When you come across an ad that you think is illegal, you can flag it with the flagging option at the right side of the ad. The ad will then automatically be taken down from the site and our customer support team is being prompted to review the ad.
    4) All of the above safety measurements link to one place: Our Safer Trading Blog at http://www.locanto.info/safer_trading/ where we inform about scam and how to recognize and avoid it. It is always updated with the latest scam patterns and gives you insight on how professional scammers work. Feel free to leave comments to share your experiences with other users.

We are sorry you have had a negative experience on Locanto.

    Best regards
