I received robo calls from a 'Thomas Whitaker' from District restitution. He left 10 daily messages on my work phone. The call back number was 888-900-3120.
I had previously received email to my home account. They said that I owed money from a 2007 pay day loan. I responded to the email asking the sender to provide printed documentation of the loan. He replied that "we don't do that, we're just an internet company". I told them that I had been a previous victim of identity theft and was advised by the NYS AG office to take extra caution. I asked what happens when I pay him and then a week later the site no longer exists? The emails stopped.
I never heard from them again. A year later I started getting calls from a guy identifying himself as 'prosecuting attorney' (same payday loan). When I asked questions like, 'don't prosecutors work for governments not private firms?', the calls stopped.
I was just about to call District Restitution, until I read these comments. Thanks scambook!
I guess that the best advice is to listen and question when something doesn't sound right.
