In today’s Scambook TV video, we’re doing a special jack-o-lantern carving presentation. Kevan invites two other members of the Scambook team, Brian and Kevin, to compete with him in a pumpkin carving competition! Just in time for Halloween 2012, we brought three pumpkins and three sets of carving tools to review. Using the same Halloween jack-o-lantern template, our contestants dive in and the pumpkin chunks go flying! Which carving tools will give Halloween shoppers the best bang for your buck? Will it be Kevan’s deluxe carving kit, Brian’s electric carving knife and super scooper or Kevin’s 4-in-1 carving knife and the special goop scoop? The outcome might surprise you!

Remember, if you’re carving jack-o-lanterns with your child or grandchild this year, make sure the child is supervised at all times and follow all the safety instructions that come with the carving tools. For very young children, throw out the templates and let them participate by drawing their own jack-o-lantern face with a nontoxic marker. Use a battery-powered LED light instead of a candle to avoid fire hazards.

And don’t forget to save the seeds! Roasted pumpkin seeds are a delicious, healthy snack — you’ll need plenty of those to compensate for candy your trick-or-treaters will be bringing home. If your kids love getting their hands slimy, they’ll have a great time cleaning the seeds, too! Here’s a simple recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds from AllRecipes.com:

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups raw whole pumpkin seeds

1 pinch salt

2 teaspoons butter, melted

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).

2. Toss seeds in a bowl with the melted butter and salt.

3. Spread the seeds in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for about 45 minutes or until golden brown; stir occasionally.

4. Let cool and enjoy!
