This week Kevan gets a bit more serious and even gets out his soap box. He starts by reiterating the fact that one of the most basic rights of American citizens is the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, freedom of speech. Kevan then begins to discuss SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation), which can be used as a legal tactic to censor people’s voices and opinions. He goes on and talks about how and why anyone can become a victim of SLAPPs and the urgent need for anti-SLAPP legislation on a federal level. Kevan lets it be known that the only way to protect everyone against SLAPPs is to urge members of Congress to push for anti-SLAPP laws that will function on a national scale (Click Above).
The First Amendment right of American citizens to freedom of speech is not as bulletproof as it may seem. Any person or organization can be forced to silence their voice if the entity against whom they speak chooses to employ SLAPPs. These Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation serve as a clandestine means of exacting censorship.

Rather than looking to win a SLAPP case, the lawyers who use this strategy are merely attempting to bury the outspoken individual or organization under a mound of legal fees by suing them with a baseless lawsuit – with defamation being one of the most commonly used ones.
If you aren’t in a position to fight a lawsuit against someone with deep pockets or if your state doesn’t have anti-SLAPP laws that could protect you, your voice may be forced into submission.
Even if you live in a state with anti-SLAPP laws, you should be aware that each state has different protocol and precedence when it comes to legal application. Depending on where you live, the outcome of your SLAPP case may turn out differently than it would elsewhere.
