I encouraged my elderly father to look into getting a power chair from the Scooter Store, which advertises that, if they "tell you that you that your insurance will pay for a chair, and they don't that they will give you the chair". We submitted all my dad's information, talked several times with their "mobility consultant" and we explained in depth how my dad's unusual but federal health insurance worked. They assured us that he would have no out of pocket expenses. The chair arrived in September 2011. When the rental bills started arriving, we were surprised. There were many more calls and discussions of why they were sending rental bills, and they continued to assure us that the chair was his. After about three months, we were informed that they had made a mistake in their paperwork and that it was too bad but he owed rental fees. At the end of February 2012, we decided that at this level of dishonesty, that they could take the chair back. (It is still in excellent condition.) They told me that they would have someone come and take in in a week or so. I have had no more conversations with them regarding this since.
What I want to know is this: When they take the chair back, are they still charging my dad's insurance the full amount?? This would constitute fraud. And who is advocating for people who cannot hear well or challenge this kind of abuse??
