Thank you for hearing me out. I sold a Mac Book Pro on Craigslist 6/14 to a guy for $1900. He was living abroad so I sent him a money request through PayPal for the said amount. Then I got an e-mail from PayPal saying that they will send me a confirmation e-mail as soon as I get paid. Then I get another e-mail from PayPal stating that to protect the buyer and the seller I need to send them a tracking number after I mail the package. The e-mail looked legitimate but at the bottom the shipping information was addressed to Lagos, Nigeria. I thought that this was a little strange, but since my paypal account said pending, I thought that all they needed was the tacking number. So I sent the package on 6/15 and e-mailed them the tracking number so I could get the transaction confirmed an PayPal would credit my account. I received an e-mail back stating that the package was confirmed and that my account would be credited as soon as possible. I waited for a day then sent them an e-mail letting them know that my account has not been updated. They sent me an e-mail staing that the transaction ammount was so large that it could take 1-2 days for my account to be updated. I waited another day and sent then another e-mail, this time I got no responce. Then I called PayPal directly. They told me that they never received any money from the buyer and that they never sent out the request for confirmation email, or the verification e-mail. They told me that the buyer set up a fake paypal email system so that I would believe everything was ok. I tried to call the postal service to put a hold on the package before it was too late. unfortunately, the package had already lefty the US. Now I have nothing. I needed that money to help me out of a severe bind. I'm sure there's nothing you guys can do, but I felt it nessessary to report it anyway.

Thanks,
Hollie Clark

  • Thank you for reporting this. I got a weird feeling when I got those e-mails asking for a Paypal account. I have been doing some research, saw your post and some others like this: http://echeng.com/journal/2009/08/19/paypal-is-the-vehicle-for-scams-on-craigslist/

    Youtube has some too: http://youtu.be/lr_7--e5A1g

In my experience and what I have read it is too good to be true when someone is not asking to reduce the price and they are in a hurry to get your item. Thanks again for your post and saving me from a possible scam.
