In Illinois the state utility companies have been deregulated, and we have the option to go with other companies to obtain our electric supply. So now we have utility companies calling us all the time to solicit their electric supplies, as well as agents who offer to help us find new utility companies by shopping around on our behalf. These companies are supposed to offer us a better rate than what we had before, and lock us into a good deal to avoid fluctuations and rises in rates.

Our small business began to work with the agent called Affiliated Power Purchasers International (APPI) in the hope to save some money for our company, as every penny saved is a struggle these days. For the first year contract with the chosen company we saw savings in our electric costs.

As that expired they contacted us again to renew the savings program for a period of three years instead of one year. We did not want to lock ourselves for an extended period of time. We simply wanted to renew it for one more year as we did before. But we were told that a longer term means locking up savings for a longer period of time and better rates. We were also told that the energy prices have seen their low’s.

Based on the facts presented to us, we reluctantly agreed to renew our contract for three years with Constellation NewEnergy to save money, but unfortunately this time we are not. Little did we know that they tricked us in getting to agree to this contract. Now we find ourselves with the following:

1. We were presented with false facts and $ savings scam. We are not saving any money.
2. On the contrary, we are paying more money to Constellation then we were paying to Ameren
3. Once we realize by reviewing our bills and comparing the rates with Ameren, we approached and wrote an letter to Constellation. They never responded. After a few attempted phone calls, we received an email from APPI stating that they won’t be able to do anything about it.

In the beginning, they told us we would save over our original Ameren company. Misrepresentation and confusion! Why would you sign customers up on a deal that is a higher rate than Ameren? That means you are scamming your customers, taking advantage of them, and why would I go with you if I’m in my right mind??

Yes, we signed a contract and it was an obligation that we took on of our own accord. But we were misled into this deal by misrepresenting the facts. The contract includes very hefty penalties for cancellation, huge enough to make us change our mind and be forced to stay with them for 3 years. They are basically telling us that “hey, we signed the contract, now abide by it.” It was not our intention to make such a long-term commitment. We are literally counting our dollars and cents in everything we do for our business, and this change does not benefit us.

These two companies have now become unforgiving brutes, unwilling to work with us. We made a genuine and humble appeal to both APPI and Constellation NewEnergy help us out and relieve us from the contract without penalty so our suffering could be avoided, but it fell on deaf ears- just because this is not a good deal to us as it was presented and we never wanted to sign a three year contract as last time.

We thought that on the other side there must be good people who would not take a hard advantage of consumers like us. Any hint of business ethic would instead show compassion in making such an exception on occasion.

They continue to show a trend on BBB complaints that they receive. Seeing what has happened to us, we know there must be more out there who haven't complained yet AND more who will soon become victims as well.

THESE COMPANIES DO NOT HAVE ANY BUSINESS ETHIC. THEY HAVE NO REGARD FOR THEIR SMALL BUSINESS CONSUMERS. THEY WILL TRICK YOU INTO SIGNING A DEAL THAT IS NOT A DEAL. THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT US, THEY ARE GETTING THEIR MONEY FROM US AND WE ARE TRAPPED BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO DESIRE TO WORK WITH US AND HAVE A HEART. THEY ARE VOID OF COMPASSION AND HUMANITY.
