I contacted a friend who is a car dealer in the Miami area and asked him if he could find me a car. I told him I wanted to spend tops $1500 because I really didn’t have a lot of money. He told me he would see what he could do. A few days later he calls me and tells me his boss, Kool Karz, LLC, found a 1996 Ford Contour with 67,000 miles on it and he could sell it to me for $2,000. I spoke with Ray Hernandez, my car salesman friend, and asked him what he thought. We are friends since the 7th grade and he has been a car dealer for a long time. I trusted his judgement and opinion. He told me that it was an awesome deal. I said o.k. but is the car mechanically sound? He told me all I would have to do was get in it and drive, that I probably would never have to make any repairs for many months. I then asked him if he would put his kids in this car. Because I have 4 kids and am single parenting I wanted to make sure the car would be o.k. for a while. He told me absolutely he would. So on February 3, 2012 I wired transferred $1,800 into Kool Karz, LLC Bank of America account. The asking price was $2,000 but I asked Ray if it would be possible for me to pay off the other $200 because I was giving him all I had, dollar wise, and wanted to just be sure nothing came up with my kids that I would be stuck for. He asked his employer and came back to me and told me that was fine. So I transferred the money. Ray said they would be driving the car up that weekend or Monday or Tuesday of the following week (sometime between February 4 and February 6, 2012). Well I heard nothing from Ray on Sunday so I contacted him on Monday. He told me they were most likely not driving up but would have the car transported via truck to me. I asked how much and he said around $120. Good deal I said and left it at that. No word from Ray the rest of the day so I called his boss around 3pm. He told me he was working on the transport but that it would be somewhere around $250. First however they would have to FedEx me the papers, then I would have to FedEx them back to them, then they would transport the car. Well it has been almost a week already and I didn’t want to wait any longer. They already got paid and I was biking my 7 year old to school 6 miles total per day. I had no way to get to any store to go food shopping and God forbid an emergency came up with the kids, what I would do. So I called Ray and said I would rent a car and come down to pick up my car. He said great we could square away any and all paperwork and be done with it. So I contacted Enterprise rent-a-car on the 7th of February for a rental for the 9th. I had a friend who was going to come with me so I wouldn’t have to worry about driving 2 cars.

So on February 9th I kept my kids home from school cause I was going to be too far away and didn’t want there to be a problem at school, i.e. Someone gets sick or whatever, and drove to Hollywood Florida to pick up my car. I was thrilled. The first sense of something going right for me and my kids in a long time.
I went, I signed the papers and Ray told me I needed to give him $100 in cash for the taxes. Not to worry about the $200 I still owed. I immediately went to the Bank of America on Dewey Street in Hollywood Florida and took out the $100 cash for the taxes on the car. I looked over the car, I drove the car, and it seemed fine. There was a missing light cover on the passenger front door of the car, but Ray told me he would get that and mail it to me. Ray told me not to worry, they just did an oil change and capped off the car with gas and I was good to go. So I went. 4.5 hour drive up the Florida turnpike in my car. God is good and life is great. I got about 20 miles and the gas gauge was at ¼ of a tank. So I said to myself, “well either the gauge is broken or this car was not filled up with gas”. So I stopped at a Shell service station and $36.00 later my car was filled up. OK I let that go because you know what, I just got a car and for a great price and there was only 67,000 miles on this car and so what they didn’t fill it up. I got a car. YAY me.
I got all the way home, no problems, car drove like dream. My friend who was following me noticed some smoke coming from the tail pipe but just watched to see if that was something that would go away. She thought maybe the car needed to kind of “clean itself out” had it been sitting a long time. I parked the car in my parking spot and my kids ran down to see mommy’s new car. We were all ecstatic.

Next morning 6am I drove my two high schoolers 1 mile to their bus stop and came home. At 8:10 am I drove my middle schooler to his bus stop outside my complex and drove my 1st grader the mile and a half to his school. No problems whatsoever. I drove the car on Friday the 10th to the local market; got some food and then that evening drove 45 minutes away to pick up my 15 year old from his kickboxing practice. We were well on our way. Independence and freedom!!! Saturday the 11th comes and I have to drive my 15 year old to his morning kick boxing class, so instead of me driving him there and then driving home than an hour later driving back I waited. I went to the local Wal-Mart in the area and then waited, with the car off at the Total fitness gym in Altamonte Springs. At 12:45 we began our drive home. I took the 436 to Red Bug Lake Road, made a left and continued to drive. Well all of a sudden the check engine light goes on. Ok, I had checked the battery and it looks new, no crude around the connectors, so I continued to drive. Then…the radio went dead and in the middle of Red Bug Lake Road and Tuskawilla, the car died. OMG, me and my 15 year old stuck in the middle of the road with what??? I called Ray immediately, and not that I thought from his distance he could do anything but seriously, what was I going to do. My 15 year old and I got out of the car and pushed it to the strip mall parking lot next to us. A very nice woman came out and helped us. I called my cousin Ed, who was the closest person I could think of to come help me. He immediately came out and figured I just needed a jump. Well when we opened the hood to the car, the first thing he noticed was the wires on the front harness of the car. No Ed is not a mechanic but he has worked on cars and knows what to look for. He told me all these wires are fried and crossed and could be grounding out. We did not know what caused the car to shut off because the battery looked fine. So he was thinking it must be wires if not the alternator. Ok he calls Ray because we all grew up together and asks him to call him back. We jump the car 5 times and it wouldn’t hold the jump. So we called the owner of Kool Karz. He says that he doesn’t know what to tell us, we bought a used car. Ed says to him, well she has not even had the car a full 48 hours. Ed then tells him I am going to send you pictures of what I am looking at. Kristopherson, or whatever his name is, the owner of Kool Karz says, well get a mechanic to look at it and let me know what he says. I would rather fix it than take it back.

So Ed gets the car towed from the Chase Bank Parking lot off Red Bug Lake Road and gets his mechanic to look at it. The mechanic puts it on a diagnostic machine and says it’s definitely the alternator. That the wires were all crossed up and frying, that I needed a tune up and that there was something wrong with the fuel sensor. $360 later he fixes the alternator, but could not fix the fuel injector because it was Sunday and the shop was technically not open. So Ed picks me up, I get my car and he tells me to drive slowly and that the earliest his mechanic could fix the fuel sensor was Wednesday, Feb 15. But that I should be careful and could at least drive the kids to where they wanted to go.
Ray had called me back Saturday evening and told me that even if he had to pay for the repair out of his pocket that he would because he was embarrassed and so very sorry this happened to a friend. I never thought and still don’t believe Ray knew the car was in that bad of shape and that he would willingly put me and my kids in a really bad car. But look here I am.
Monday comes, no call from anyone, so I called the owner of Kool Karz. He tells me to have a few mechanics look at the car. Tuesday, February 14th, 2012 I took the car to Good Year –Gator Tire here in Oviedo, FL. I explained to the manager what my problem was and we went outside to the car so I could better show him. Well this manager and 4 of his mechanics came out and when I opened the hood and said, and I quote “WOOO, Lady I would immediately take this car back and get your money back. All the wires are fried, you can smell it burning, you need a whole new harness”, “all you’re going to do is throw money into this car and it is definitely not worth it”. Now I don’t know this mechanic or anyone else for that matter, so why would he tell me that? I said to him, o.k. can you at least fix the fuel sensor so I can drive it possibly back to Hollywood. He pulled the car into one of the bays, separated the fuel sensor wires, added transmission fluid and told me I had a transmission leak. I thought I would die. I went to pay him and he told me Happy Valentine’s Day. That he could not in good conscious charge me because honestly he thought I should take the car back. I thanked him and came home. Immediately I called the owner of Kool Karz. He told me, well you bought a used car, and it’s your problem. He asked me what I wanted from him and I said “just do the right thing; I had the car less than 48 hours and all this stuff is happening and I either want my money back or for him to fix the car”. He told me to take it to yet another mechanic because mechanics are rip offs and they were probably lying to me. I took it to the Pep Boys in Oviedo and shockingly they said exactly the same thing. My husband called kool Karz from NJ and spoke with the owner who told my husband, “well that is why we wanted to transport the car to her; this is not my problem, she bought a used car and too bad”. So my husband said, “Are you trying to say because she drove the car home this was her fault? You sold her a bad car.” The owner said then I should take it to his mechanic in Hollywood. 4.5 hour drive in a car that does not run??? Ok I let the hot heads cool down and called the owner yesterday the 15th of February, 2012. I said listen, I realize I bought a used car and if you told me that I had to do a tune up, oil change, radiator flush, whatever, I might go with that. I might even go with a bad alternator. But all this stuff??? That is not right. So his response to me was “too bad, you bought a used car, not my problem. If you drove off my lot and the car blew up right next door or around the corner from my lot, it would still be your problem. Now if you want to add another zero to that $2000 I would be happy to put you in a new car.” Wow I said, well I want you to do something here, he said well call my mechanic. He will fix it for 100 bucks. Seriously, 3 mechanics said it would cost a lot of money and you are telling me $100. This guy is lying. My husband called again, they had a yelling match and here I am today sitting with a 1996 Ford Contour that is now bucking because of the fuel sensor, burning because of the wires, leaking transmission fluid everywhere. Transmission is slipping. Help ME PLEASE!!!
I am single parenting 4 kids. My husband lives in NJ and does not pay child support because he cannot find a job. I have been in Florida for 1 year and have been unable to find a job solely supporting my 4 kids on unemployment. The money I paid the car with was my income tax check which by the way because you are on unemployment, you don’t get much back. It was everything I had. I took a chance….yes. But I asked the questions, I trusted the salesman and what I got was robbed.
On 2/21/2012 I get a text message from my friend Ray Hernandez telling me he was fired over this whole car thing. Only to find out on 2/22/2012 that he was lying to me because he just doesn’t want to deal with this situation.

Sincerely,
Concetta Brancaccio
