I purchased a new computer from Best Buy a few weeks ago but just got around to taking it out of the box and installing Microsoft Office 365 program when a message popped up that the product code was valid but the download had an error and not to retry installing as that would invalidate the software. I called the number shown on the alert page and assumed I was speaking to a Microsoft tech person Kritika Sharma,1.855.803.4635 and 1.855.803.4639. She stated that my IP address had a Trojan and could not be fixed with any virus or internet security protection that I may have. She took control of my computer and stated they could repair and remove the Trojan and install a firewall so that all of my other devices would not be infected but it would cost 299.95. But since my computer was new the discounted fee would be $199.95. I asked if I took the computer back to Best Buy for them to repair, she advised that even if I got a new computer the same thing would happen. My computer and IP address was now being held hostage. I wasn't feeling very comfortable giving my credit card so I asked if I could pay using PayPal and was told no but I could use a Prepaid card. I was unable to gain control of my computer so I gave my credit card number at which time someone began working remotely on my computer. Because I have some personal information on a few files for which they had completed access to, now I believe my identity and bank information has been compromised. I called the credit card company this morning and the charge is being disputed. I've also now had to put a fraud alert on my bank account and all three credit reporting companies. Now they keep calling my cell and sending emails to get me to respond back and confirm they had fixed the problem. Needless to say that's not happening. For fear they may have installed a backdoor on my computer for the future, I'm now taking my computer back to the Geek Squad to fix. I wonder how many other unknowing people have had this experience.
