my computer was fine until suddenly a pop-up window with windows logo and a telephone number (a 1800 number) appeared while using internet. It informed me that that my identity was at immediate risk and prompted to contact the number within 5 minutes or computer will blocked completely. I could not close the pop-up window or navigate through internet. My Norton 360 was also not working. When called, the person on the other end told me that he was from Dialport and Microsoft or apple computers automatically direct such problems to them.
In panic, I was compelled to allow them to share my computer. They ran a Microsoft scan but not found any particular problem, apparently all they did was removing add-ons of my browsers. In the process they requested my e mail address, phone number, computer password and credit card details. I am yet to find out whether somebody has stolen my identity or has installed any spyware in my computer. They also tried to sell me a software for US$ 50 saying that my IP address is affected and the software will prevent future risk. A massive charge of US$200 at the end. I received a follow up call asking whether computer is working well. I wonder whether the real company is using something doggy to access computers through pop up window and then fix and charge for a problem that do not exist.
