I'm running Windows 10 on a 64 bit machine. I was surfing around yesterday when my screen froze --a pop up window stated that I had contracted a computer virus and had to call this toll free number (855.755.1855) to fix this problem. I literally could not close the window and my machine was frozen, so had no choice. A pleasant tech from india answered and said I'd been hacked, so he used LogMeIn to remotely "unfreeze" my computer and search for malware. They were professional, said they were Microsoft "certified" techs but a separate company. Ok, that didn't raise any red flags.

They showed me about 4 or 5 potential attempts to hack my information (from Korea, Chicago, LA) saying their software would block these hackers. Made sense. So I proceeded at the cost of $150. This wasn't exorbitant as I've had the Geek Squad charge a similar amount. They also wanted me to purchase AVG Cloud Pro for $99 (1 year). I declined and they were ok with this.

I watched carefully as they downloaded anti-malware software from File Hippo (ex. Ccleaner, Malwarebytes anti spyware, Zemana Anti Malware). It seemed legitimate. They insisted they weren't scammers. They ran software which checked all my files and cleaned the computer for about 1 hr.

I ended the remote session, had to leave, so they said please call back to enter a special password on my PC. BIG RED FLAG!!!! When I tried to call back, I kept getting a canned message that "all circuits are busy, try later". They literally called me back 3 times, and I didn't answer. Meanwhile, I checked various community boards and discovered this company had scammed others for much more $.

I ran the MS Safety Scanner and didn't find any malicious software. So, for now, all seems in order on my PC. Advice from others appreciated!!
