Fraud charges have been laid against the operator of an Ontario addiction centre after he was accused of hiring fake doctors at treatment facilities in Caledon and Burk’s Falls.

Ontario Provincial Police say John Derek Haines, the owner of the Addiction Canada Treatment Centre, has been charged with fraud over $5,000, money laundering, proceeds of crime and drug trafficking.

Authorities say he was also charged with fraud for submitting $11,000 worth of claims to Ontario’s drug benefit plan.

Two Toronto-area men were arrested last year after police discovered they were hired to work at the privately run facility without a proper medical license.

Richard Tucker, 30, of Waterloo, who was initially charged with impersonating a doctor, is now facing charges of fraud under $5,000 and trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act. The charge of impersonating an officer has been dropped.

Munish N. Malik, 46, of Richmond Hill, was charged with personation and fraud.

Haines and Tucker are scheduled to appear in court on June 30.
