My Tech Bay is a bunch of shysters that rely on false advertising to charge exorbitant fees -- provided they aren't outright identify thieves.

Fiancée got a notification in her web browser from our ISP, Shaw, saying her computer had contracted a virus or something and she should call My Tech Bay. She called My Tech Bay and gave her credit card info to them, they were rude about it and asked for her banking info instead (she refused). They said there was a problem on the machine and she should turn on all computers on our network so they could fix them all. She gave them remote access to her computer and they began installing something. She called me at this point and I told her to unplug the router as this was all really suspicious. She contacted Shaw who claimed they had no idea who these people were and they don't have any browser notifications directing people to them. She wound up with a $650 (CDN) bill to her credit card. I contacted them and they claimed to be legitimate, they had installed AVG and no need to talk to the banks as they would cancel her contract and refund the money. Even if they are not outright identity thieves, they pretend to be someone they aren't (Shaw in our case), use untrue scare tactics ("Your machine has a virus!") and then charge exorbitant fees for their services (charging $300/year to give you a $40/yr AVG license).

I still am suspicious they might have put a rootkit on her machine to download personal info, so we've cancelled the credit cards, changed all her passwords, and had Geek Squad (from a nearby Best Buy) wipe the machine -- their tech support contract is half the price and they aren't dodgy about their advertising.
