I was looking for information, saw an ad for InstantCheckMate, decided to try it out. When I finally got through the entering of my info and my credit card, I found that all of the info they were willing to give me for my $44+ a month (with a three month contract) was easily available on the internet for free. What a scam!! I immediately called them and insisted that I get a total refund; they agreed that they would not charge me beyond the first month (which I never used), but I would have to pay for the one/first month. I told the operator to go back to his supervisor, and if they did not refund the entire amount (including a $1.99 charge for some sort of upgrade, I can't even remember what but it was also a rip-off) I would report them to my credit card company and let them fight it out. After a few minutes on hold, the operator came back and said they would refund the entire amount, but it might take up to a week. Wonder what they do with the money in that time.
Anyway, I check a week later and they had refunded the $44+ but not the $1.99. I called them again and they agreed to refund that amount but it would take five to seven days. I wonder how many $1.99's they keep for five to seven days and how much they make by doing that. I'll bet they hope people will not make a fuss for such a small amount, and just let it go.
So the moral of the story is: first, don't get involved with these people. Second, don't let them get away with charging you for their services if you do make the mistake of getting involved with them. Insist on a refund, don't take no for an answer, and, if necessary, tell your credit card company not to pay them because they are frauds. It always pays to fight back.
