Frustrated at futile attempts to connect a Roku streaming stick to my LED Smart TV, I looked on the TV web browser under www.roku.com and saw a message stating, "For Roku technical support call" a number which fraudulently answered that it was Roku Technical Support.
It was a scam. The person I spoke with said that Roku support was FREE, but in a bait and switch tactic added, UNLESS there was a technical problem that required more expertise to resolve. I said I didn't need added help since I was very happy with the my paid tech support subscription though AT&T, my internet service provider. The alleged Roku representative said that my computer network had warning alerts that needed to be removed. He said, trust me I've been doing this over twenty years and your subscription will not take care of it.About three minutes into the sales pitch, still pretending to be Roku and stating that Roku was going to give me thirty years of free technical support if I purchased a superior software program that would prevent viruses and malware and warnings from infecting my PC. I should have known that was too good to be true. I said, why is Roku selling this service. I never saw it offered on their website in the past. I asked him if he was sure it was Roku and finally got him to admit his company was partnered or subcontracted with Roku. There were other red flags along the way, like wanting me to pay by providing my checking account number. I said I would have to use a credit card to pay for the purchase of the removal, the set-up, and the thirty years of free tech support that came with the purchase of the software. I even called AT&T and cancelled my fifteen dollar per month service, considering the alleged 30 year service would pay for itself in a couple of years, according to what the salesman had promised. Another red flag was that the salesman insisted I echosign an agreement to "authorize the transfer of funds." Unfortunately, he stil had control of my computer when he was scrolling quickly over the agreement, pressuring me to sign without allowing me to read what he was urging me to click on. The other red flag was that his company used logmein rescue, the same tech support service used by my internet service provider. I was concerned that I might have been defrauded after giving it more thought, so I checked out the pricey software and was very disappointed not to be able to find any reviews of it and faulty copy on the website for Privacy Essential Software, at which point I decided to use my PC to check online with Roku on their chatline. I spoke with Roku support technician who told me they were not associated in any way with ITSC, a company that the Roku rep had never heard of. The Roku support tech also told me that any warnings on my network would not prevent a setup, the opposite of what the poser for Roku had told me. I immediately called my credit union to attempt to cancel the transaction, but was unable to because of the document I had echosigned prevented me from cancelling it. I had to call my ISP and sign up for AT&T tech support with a one year cancellation penalty, eventhough I had subscribed to their tech support for over two years. I had tech support remove the Privacy Essential Software which I did not trust because of their fraudulent sales tactics.
Although the Roku setup by ITSC worked initially in the first few moments after setup, the next time I tried to log on to Roku on my smart TV, after a week or so later, it could not connect. I called the authentic Roku tech support again, who spent about an hour with me, eventually securing a good connection by switching the streaming stick on the smart TV with a Roku 2 that had been connected to another TV. The difficulty in setup turned out to be a compatibility problem between the streaming stick and the smart TV.
Another deception was that the tech support that I tried calling after hours the weekend that I purchased it was not available. The salesman told me it was a 24/7 service. This was a bold, shameless, unabashed lie. The beauty of my old tech support was that it truly was 24/7 and I could reach them on weekends, holidays and in the wee hours of the morning, whenever I needed help. I really felt ripped off by ITSC. This company's sales people lied about so many things and tricked me into signing a document that obviated and nullified all the assertions of the salesmen. I didn't even read what I had signed in its entirety until a week later when I looked up the email and pulled up the PDF. The men I spoke with had East Indian accents--there was a lot of background noise. I suspect their "Head Office" in NY actually might front for an operating location in India. The salesman said "Trust me." That was my mistake. The deceptive practices and misuse of echosign employed by this company is elder financial abuse in my case, and shameless exploitation of the consumer in any case. ITSC certainly does not provide its tech support service 24/7 as promised by its salesmen.
