I received a "cold call", from a "private caller", what appears from doctors' offices. Person stated he was a "Senior Microsoft Technician". I am on the DO NOT CALL register. I own Microsoft products. I logically assumed the call was legitimate. As others have stated, the person told me he can see errors related to banking operations. He knew my email address, my phone number, and even a transaction from my Discover Card 2 months earlier. All of that information was obtained fraudulently. He misrepresented himself, got my email address, and accessed an item on my Discover Card statement, all without my permission. That is fraud. I called my bank, Wells Fargo. They deactivated my debit card. Somehow despite having done that and requesting a "stop payment", and requesting to file a claim before the transaction posted, the money was debited from my account. I went to a local branch and was connected to the claims department. I explained my situation, said fraud was committed and as I write this, the money has been returned to me "provisionally". The company may fight back but the information I provided is factual. They had no right to call me and certainly no right to have had previous access to my computer. I also filed a complaint with the FTC. The bank is fairly confident that I will prevail as is the computer scam/fraud section of the SC Department of Consumer Affairs. If anyone is as foolish as I was, act quickly. Contact your bank, initiate a 90 Fraud Alert, freeze your credit report, obtain Identity Theft Protection, change usernames and passwords, run anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-maleware from Microsoft. Also use Microsoft Security Essentials (this company somehow not only disabled it, I cannot even install it, so I use Windows Defender). I am embarrassed and I spent 2 days mentally beating myself up for being scammed.
