Cold call claiming information on vulnerability of system running on Windows XP - 1,200 faults running through one of the drivers - and admitted to being a licence of microsoft. Sold a package to clean up and provide life time protection (pressured from one year at 150USD to life time) and support independent of machine; spent two hours placing software/ spyware and sundry scans. But result was significant improvement in boot up. Transpired that some 171 cookies in place collecting advertiser information. Subsequent cleaning and securing IP address required approximately 1hour of technician time.
Moral - users of popular proprietary system software are vulnerable to offers over the phone; do not purchase tech support this way unless you know the company concerned. It is more straightforward (and considerably cheaper) to use the friendly engineer in your local PC shop.
