International boundaries

Scam artist

* Looks for high-value goods on Gumtree

* Offers to buy without negotiation, and pay on Paypal invoice from seller. You might be initially contacted by SMS (with an international country code)

* Asks for condition report and photos to gain seller's trust.

* Claims he can't inspect as out of the country

* Will buy sight unseen and arrange collection through transport agent

* Asks you to suspend Gumtree ad and send a Paypal invoice

Then it gets complex for Mr Kirk (and for the seller):

* Oops, freight agent won't collect unless transport is pre-paid - will the seller help? (At this point sellers/targets should break-off communications and put the item back on sale)

* Offers to transfer item price PLUS transport fee (usually $800-900) through Paypal

* Asks seller to go to Western Union (or equivalent, because he can't get there) and send the additional 'freight' funds to Malaysian account. These funds, of course, are not actually in the seller's account.

* Then initiates a string of FAKE emails from Paypal (in poor English with spelling mistakes) indicating that the total funds will only be released into the seller's account once freight funds have been transferred and received in Malaysia (as though Paypal would negotiate this!)

*The fake Paypal emails request that the Western Union (etc) transfer receipt be sent to an 'official' email address as part of the process of releasing the remaining funds into the seller's account.

These email are often found in the Junk mailbox.

* The expectation is that the seller will be silly enough to risk paying the freight bill on the basis that they will ultimately receive the final installment of funds from Paypal/Frank Kirk.

* Really dumb scam and he's/she's/they've been at it for years, it seems.
