I am about to lose $399 and possibly more.
Mugshots.com makes private use of public data to extort monies indiscriminately. I, for the first time in my life, searched myself online and nearly had a heart attack to see my face on a public search engine. I proceeded to follow a link taking me to the aforementioned website, and it is there I found my arrest photo with arresting charges listed beneath. Those were the charges, but not close to the outcome that became of those charges. A corporate employee, seemingly prepared to fend off any capitulation, proceeded to say, very quickly, that I would need to pay $399 to gain a license to remove said posting; granted that it wasn't violent or a felony. Should I have not been confused? A license, and a courtesy apparently, to remove something that was none of their business? I continued to reiterate, in my own terms, so that I didn't think I misunderstood, which caused perturbation. I know very well it is public record, but to pay $399 to remove private traumatic personal history, inaccurate at that, which happened over decade removed is criminal. I remained calm and after some further talking, I explained, in a calm manner, that this was a type of extortion. He proceeded to say that, "if you look it up, it actually says..." that extortion is putting your life in danger, something or rather, and that he wasn't holding a gun to my head. I said that I wanted to begin the steps of removal, he read the first part of his "dialogue" way too fast, so I couldn't squeeze in the fact that I did not have the $399 right then. I said I would call back, and that was it. I went online to do some research, and found that this website is hated by everyone (I hesitate to call this a company). I looked up my state's laws and found that we recently passed a SB to somewhat fight this.I contacted my local representative and I hope to utilize some leverage with their help. I called him back after reaching out to my local rep, and told him that the information was inaccurate, which didn't occur to me to mention the last call because I was stunned that this was even happening, and that our state actually had a law against posting inaccuracies. He lost his cool and began to talk down to me, rushing again, and said that it is nothing more that public information with the glimpse of what happened during that arrest. This, what's supposed to be man, barked off that there is nothing else and goodbye; he hangs up on me, hilarious! Marc G Epstein has built a vehicle to extort money from the public; I hesitate to say legally, but it seems to be at this point. We don't allow voyeurism in our society, so why would we allow somebody to take our most devastating moments, and even make a penny from it? This isn't a one day print either; this is online, on every search engine, and nearly forever. I hope taking this time with Scambook will make a difference for the ENTIRE public; good, bad, or indifferent.
