Complaint 24053 Details

Electrical harness caught fire attempting to start engine after new
batteries installed. Harness and ignition burned. Lake Toxaway Marine towed boat to their shop. They informed they could install mercury harness and would need new ignition switch + fuel filter for
$1400.00. I told them to proceed. They delivered boat to dock
about 10 days later. Boat engine was dead would not start. I called
them (John Harman mechanic) and he said take it to mercury certified mechanic to fix the carburetor. I had to hire another tow
to dock and transported boat to another certified mercury mechanic. He found:
1. Gross negligence in Toxaway Marine --They installed WRONG
after market cheap harness with 10 wires -only 8 were needed
Toxaway did not advise me they would install cheap after
market harness. Correct harness had to be re-wired with 8
wires.
2. Ignition swithch in boat had to be re-wired was incorrect with 5
wires, correct ignition switch has 6 wires.
3. Found that the choke was not connected making it impossible
to start the engine.

This whole episode caused us tremendoust frustration and inconvenience having to tow boat again across the lake at more expense then having to tow boat 320 miles to authorized mercury dealer. We paid an additional $530.00 to have problem properly
corrected. Thank You
