I am commenting on the fol that someone else lodged."Received call said to be from Microsoft reporting that there was virus problems with my computer which needed sorting out. Asked to open a file that showed large number of 'warnings' and 'errors' which could be sorted if I agreed to pay for extended 'warranty'. Foolishly I did, they then proceeded to load a program after which they started going through my whole system, as far as I could see.
My computer works OK, but it is not faster. I'm worried about my on-line bank accounts."
My experince was partly similar except that at the end my system was running better than before. As in the above they took control of my computer but only because I gave them access which is a process I understand. I'm not much worried about my bank accounts because my credit card provider tells me they only took the agreed fee. On ther other hand I suspect all this only happened because a couple of days earlier this company had downloaded onto my computer all of the "errors" which they subsequently detected (thereby using up most of monthly allowance from my ISP) and which made my machine so slow it couldn't even connect to the net. So I'm in 2 minds. My machine now runs better than before but it cost me $130 to fix problems that were probably mostly (but not entirely) put on my machine by this company. What I would like to know is how did they get enough access to my machine to put all the errors & warnings there and thereby cause my machine to seize up? And do they still have access to my machine. Can anyone provide advice?
