Exactly as described by the others. Airbnb support indifferent, promised call from the "security team" never came.
Their system lulls users into a sense of security but underneath and in the T&Cs it is essentially "any problems, you're on your own".
This is such an easy scam to pull that airbnb ought to be all out to protect "guests" from being subject to it and, instead of indifference, they should have a "here's what you can do to help the police catch these scum" department.
