On Sept 26, 2012 my mother and I were offered a $150 gift card, a $50 gift certificate for Rioz Restaurant and two 3 Day 2 Night Vacation Giveaways, of which were thrown in after hesitation to say yes, to attend a free lunch with a no more than 2 hr presentation and would be helping the gentleman meet his monthly quota. To be sure we would show up the next day he told us we had to leave a $20 deposit to hold our place and that we would get it back right after the presentation and be sure to tell them we were retired or I wouldn’t qualify to attend the presentation. I am not retired and work full time making less than 30k a year. He also ran out the door after us to give us two more freebies for the local area we were shopping in that day and thanked us again.
When we arrived we were assigned to one sales rep and taken with many other attendees to a room to view a slide presentation and hear about how people live longer when they take vacations away from home for more than just a weekend at a time and that timeshares are not what they once were. That they had a bad rep but now because of this timeshares have evolved to where you are no longer locked into staying or vacationing in the same resort or hotel every year, now you can choose to vacation anywhere with Wyndham with their new point system or thru something called RCI. I sat politely through the presentation because I knew it was out of my financial ability to be able to afford and just knew I would be leaving with my free gifts in hand shortly. WRONG!
After the presentation we were taken to another room and sat at a table where the rep proceeded to explain this point system of 300,000 or 154,000 at an astronomically, unbelievable high price tag that I could never afford. She stated and stressed that the several other perks and VIP benefits she was offering were only being offered today if I signed up and they could never offer them to me again, they would be gone forever and I would not be eligible to take the tour again and get these prices. A couple of the ones I remember were free membership in a Perks Program that would normally cost over $600 that gave discounts for dining and shopping and the other was a price freeze for future purchases at the price that the points were selling for that day. She was writing this all down on a piece of paper that disappeared.
After telling her again I could not afford this ever and that I couldn’t anyway because I was going through a refinance of my condo and could not take out any loans or more lines of credit that would bring my credit score down, or affect my debt to income ratio she replied that what they do is just take a look and it was only a soft, not a hard inquiry because they weren’t applying for credit, just looking, so I agreed, foolishly. When she finally got that I could not afford the amounts she was showing me the rep got up and said she would be right back and went to talk to another woman, a Manager, then came back and mentioned casually in conversation that the company spends around $500 per person to attend these presentations with all the freebies they give out. I felt pangs of guilt when she said this to me for wanting to take the freebies and run without accepting any offers at that point.
The Manager came over and proceeded to tell me that oh they had a package for me that a couple had paid off on and only owed $18,500 but they would give it to me at a discount of $10,500 for 84,000 points! After telling her no again I cannot afford it they zeroed in on the fact that I had never taken a vacation and that I deserved it and they wanted me to take one. They offered to throw in 216,000 bonus points and membership in the Perks Program and price freeze for future purchases for the price that inventory was selling for that day for the next year so that I could take a 10 day vacation anywhere I wanted and then also extra weeks at only $249 no points and bring as many people as I want through RCI at affiliated Resorts.
They took me off site to tour a beautiful resort that I would be vacationing in, or so I thought. I found out at the signing, 4-5 hrs later, the one they toured me through is not the one I ended up with. They baited then switched me. After being worn down for 4-5 hrs they me convinced yes I do deserve this wonderful investment vacation package that I could take for lifetime vacations they are so kind to bend over backwards to come up with for me as I was a single mom all these years and never got to take one. I was thinking they cared and they had me in tears that wow I might finally be able to take a vacation when they kept throwing in more free stuff. Now that I look back it was to entice me to buy because I kept saying no.
At some point the Manager mentioned a Bill Me Later plan that would allow me to pay it off for the first 6 months without any finance charges and I mentioned that I had that account already. While being distracted by my rep showing me on an electronic board all the places I could vacation, the Manager went and tried to put $5,000 then $4,000 on my Bill Me Later account but was declined. I only know this because I got emails after the fact from BML apologizing for declining the credit, but she did put $2,000 on it and also applied for and got approved a Visa credit card with Barclay Bank on which she put the $8,849 balance on that I also was told no finance charges if paid off within the first 6 months but that is not the case. At this point when she brought back the paperwork I felt it was done and I couldn’t undo it so I was taken to another desk and rushed through the signing off on paperwork that was very briefly explained and definately not in detail and NEVER at any point did anyone verbally tell me about the cancellation policy. I am stunned and sick to my stomach that this contract has not been cancelled and my money and credit returned to the state it was before this shark infested presentation. I never was given time to read through any of the paperwork but was rushed to sign off on everything and left feeling unsure, confused and uneasy about what I had been through. I am sure this is why they rush you through and only briefly mention what you are signing but NEVER verbally tell you the cancellation policy because they are hoping you will not look over the document until after you return home from vacation at which time it would be too late to do so. This is deceitful and despicable and what happened in my case. You can rest assured if it had been pointed out and mentioned at the signing as were a few other items, I would have been sure to cancel this contract within the time frame given or never signed the contract in the first place. I know in my case it was not mentioned at all because Wyndham did not want me to know this information because they were aware they were being deceitful and had not told the truth to get me to purchase and knew I would discover this and did not want me to cancel the contract.
I am not a stupid person but am feeling so at this point. The perfect solution would be to have this contract cancelled, not owe any maintenance fees and get all my money back.
Wyndham has left an extremely bad impression and I will forever steer people away from them at all costs.
