A very nice girl solicited me for a scholarship program through this company, based on subscription sales. I really didn't want anything on their book or magazine list but was told I could donate a book or magazine to a children's or VA hospital. So I bought a dictionary for $32.00 and paid by check. Check cleared, done deal right? Wrong!! Check was written on 11/3 and cleared two weeks later, I think. On 12/11, I got a bill stating I owed an additional 36.95, for a book you can buy on Amazon for $25.00. I could accept $32.00, because you have to make a small percentage off the sale. But $68.95 is over a 50% markup over retail. The reason of the cost increase in the company's words:"Any difference in price from order copy is either an error by salesperson or due to current price increases beyond our control. My student had a price sheet which I saw. So I wrote to the company.

Dear Sirs,
Not a penny more!
The fact that you would have your sales people quote a price incorrectly is your fault, not mine. Your fault in not keeping the price lists current and or your “sales people” current on prices. The other potential excuse you listed for a price increase is a current price increase beyond your control. That book, Websters Ill Contemporary Dictionary is available new for $25.00 retail.
As I did not purchase the book for myself , rather as a donation, and paid the $32.00 quoted on your price list, I do not feel legally, financially or morally responsible to pay the $36.95 bill I just received.
Further more after googling your company, I suspect you are running some form of scam operation. I therefore am sending copies of your bill and this letter to my lawyer, Mayor Phyllis Maggazu, Governor Chris Christie and The Better Business Bureau.
I consider this case closed. If I continue to receive bills, I intend to prosecute.

Margot Hackett

CC: Governor Chris Christie, Mayor Phyllis Magazzu, The Better Business Bureau, Paul Bernstein, atty at law

And I did cc all parties. Actually the mayor of West Berlin sounded very concerned and asked me if I could send the materials to her office post haste. I encourage all of you to do the same.

  • That sales person lied and took advantage of your kindness to receive a commission and earn points of which she will not receive once a complaint is placed by you to the clearing house. what she did out of sheer greed and stupidity is lied about the book in several ways' 1.) the organization she works for or is affiliated with does not work with support of sponsor any children's hospital and 2.) she never explained that the $32.00 you paid for was just a deposit and that you have a balance to make in order to receive your purchase. this type of lies deceit and manipulation is what's tarnishing the names and reputation of many hard working honest solicitors. The outdoor direct sales marketing industry has been around for over 100 years now and many repeat customers have purchased periodicals & publications by which they've used to help educate their families but situations like this is what's been destroying the industry and we all have to collectively try and put a stop to this. You should mail in a copy of your receipt with a letter of what you were told and how you've been lied to and deceived and that no such deposit and or balance was explained and the company will adjust the cost and charger the sales agent and still send you the book.

  • FYI
For those participating in helping one of our members by purchasing a book or magazine please carefully read or look over your receipt and make sure that it is written legibly that what you ordered is stated clearly on receipt that the members name is on that receipt and that their name matches their I.D. and most importantly' there are only two ways to pay for your order 1.) MAKE A DEPOSIT and then mail in your balance within 10 business days before receiving your purchase which means if you get a white cardboard looking copy/ receipt that means you have a balance 2.) or do the TOTAL COST then you only get the first copy and it should state on your receipt 0 BALANCE.
some of these young folks cave in to peer pressure and sometimes may result into lying to make a sales and we need to catch them report them and stop this.

    ALSO:
WE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY MONETARY HAND OUTS DONATIONS OR CONTRIBUTIONS OF ANY KIND so if someone suggests or ask for one please do not participate.
You can donate a book or magazine subscription to someone ONLY if the total cost is paid. If paying by check we do not accept post dated check's we do not hold checks and if you are told that you can write a check it won't go in for several days then IT IS A LIE"

  • This industry while some what unorthodox and unconventional has been around for over 100 years now but has seen it's share of bad news while remembering that throughout the years many different type crews cropped up in the past that chooses to not follow the basics and have done things with their bad habits to where they have tarnished the name and reputation of the outdoor direct sales marketing industry

One must remember that every individual is their own person and what tempts or convinces a person to steal lie cheat or scam others for their own personal private greedy gain is what's been boggling the minds of experts in the field of studying human behavior for many many years to the point where their actions affects either the company school or organization they work for or are a part of and also may create a ripple affect that's been known to destroy reputations and lives.
The sad thing is that when irresponsible reckless individuals create those problems like employee's of fast food chains tampering with the foods they prepare or cashiers stealing money or credit card info's to wall street scams bankers, investment brokers to even door to door sales people lying stealing or misrepresenting the company & product then often times the losers are the clients and the company ,
