My Ford Windstar was subject to a safety recall due to corrosion of the front sub-frame. The corrosion is the result of multiple design defects leading to failures of sub-frame and rear axle, which have resulted in multiple accidents and at least one fatality in Massachusetts. The vehicle was serviced per the recall instructions and returned in April 2011. On 10/29/2012, just 18 months after the recall repairs the sub-frame failed resulting in unsafe and unstable driving conditions. Upon inspection, the Ford dealership suggested the vehicle should not be driven. Ford customer service refused to cover the cost of the repair, stating it is not defective, not part of the original recall, not within warranty, and not subject to any customer service actions. Ford customer service suggested "if the owner disputes the quality of the recall service action, the owner should return the vehicle the original dealer service location that performed the service", even though the dealer has deemed the vehicle unsafe to drive. The repair estimate is $3,300.00 and value is $3,387.00. I am now without a vehicle. Ford refused to cover the cost of a loaner or rental until I can purchase a new vehicle. I am sad to say that I will never purchase another Ford vehicle as long as I live. I have been disappointed by Ford Customer Service multiple times in the past. I will share this information with NHTSA, BBB, Consumer Reports, and continue to blog this information for days, weeks, and months to come, in an attempt to inform consumers to beware of failures resulting in unsafe conditions even after the recall action and repair was performed.

  • Seeking Resolution: Other
  • Ford should offer buy-back to all owners at pro-rated blue book value of vehicles which have prematurely failed as a result of the design and quality defects associated with the front sub-frame and rear axle. I will seek legal council and establish means for class action lawsuit representing all owners subject of the original Windstar "rust-belt" and later Virginia state recall.
