I fell while in Cusco (Peru), sustained serious knee injuries, and was hospitalized there before returning for immediate surgery in Kansas City. The physician in Cusco stated in a letter that the return flight required first class seating accommodation to extend my leg cast. My reservation (coach seating) was on American Airlines, but AA indicated (by telephone) there was no first class seat available from Cusco because the service was by LAN Airlines with a smaller plane. The AA agent advised me to travel to the larger Lima, Peru Airport to secure first class seating there. I followed the directive of American Airlines, but was told there were no first class seats available that day or the following day. I had to purchase a one-way first class seat on Delta Airlines ($4400) to obtain the necessary class medical accommodation.

American Airlines has now declined my request to issue credit for the unused (return) portion of the ticket. One reason given was that many passengers purchased round trip tickets and flew one-way to save money. My return reservation was cancelled and the vacated coach seat was sold to another passenger for the return flight from Peru to the United States. My request was declined by telephone and I can get no response to multiple letters.

If you can assist me with this matter, I would be grateful.
