Woman calls from unkwn number, stating to be "check system" and advises me that she has a fraudulent checked linked to my social. Which has to be completely false since I don't use checks. She then told me that I was mandated to have my attorney or myself contact her office in regards to this matter before they forward it to the courts. After listening to the message again, and as an ex-bill collector, I realized that she left this very detailed message on my husband's cell phone. In the state in California, by law you must verify the debtor and let the debtor know that it is an attempt to collect a debt and information obtained can be used for that purpose, which is impossible and illegal to do via voicemail. I did not bother to call back. I would rather wait for the courts to contact me by mail than deal with unprofessional and illegal company!
