I received a call from V731192202 00143 1-270-392-3260 from Smart Shoppers Savings Club. Based on a box I checked on a contest website, I was called by them. I was told that I was one of the "lucky few" who qualified for a $50 gift card and that they needed my address to send it to me. I asked if my information was to be shared with anyone and they assured me that it would not be. THe operator said she input information directly into the computer and that they can't even write down any information. Stupidly, I provided my address. Then she asked if I was interested in receiving discount vouchers in the mail. I was under no obligation to purchase anything and regardless, the gift card (which I could use in any store like Walmart or Sears or in certain fast food restaurants anywhere in Canada) was mine to keep. I would just need to pay a $3.00 activation fee for the gift card (via credit card or debit card). If I chose not to receive any more vouchers, I could cancel them after 1 month, otherwise I would be charged $28 monthly to keep getting them. She assured me the discounts would be in the area of 50% or more. Any way, when I said I didn't want to provide credit card info over the phone, she kept trying to assure me that I wasn't obligated to buy anything. I asked for the website and she told me it was www.smartshoppersavingsclub.com. When it wouldn't come up under Google, she told me she had it on her screen at that moment and that something must be wrong with my search engine. I told her to keep the card. After she kept trying to keep me on the phone, I had to just hang up. They used several techniques to increase my confidence that it was a legitimate business such as saying the conversation was being recorded for quality assurance purposes, etc. Given the complaints here, I'm glad I didn't give them any info but I'll keep my eyes peeled to my statements for funny activity anyway.
