pay1040.com is a payment processing company that accepts online credit card and debit card payments sent to the IRS. They claim that when paying by credit card there is a convenience fee of 2.1 percent of amount being paid or 3.89 flat fee if paid by debit card. This claim is presented on the IRS site as well as the Pay1040.com site. When a payment is made by debit card , however, you are not offered a choice to use it as debit. It automatically charges debit as credit and then charges 2.1 percent. On a large payment this adds up to a large sum. This is a deceptive misrepresentation designed to dupe payer into debit card payment for a flat 3.89 fee when they have no intention of honoring 3.89 fee. This is a shameful ripoff and connected to a US government funded agency.There is no savings using debit card. Their so called flat fee is a blatant lie!
