I purchased a new rebuilt engine for my 2000 Maxum Boat in April of 2011 from US Engine inc. in Kent, Washington. Within a few hours of using the boat on the water my oil pressure dropped and my warning alarm sounded. I opened the engine compartment and found the engine dumped large quanties of oil into the bottom of my boat. I took it back to US Engines who provided a 7 year warranty with the engine. They claimed to find the problem and fixed it after a couple of weeks in their shop. I used the boat again in June of 2011 and the same problems occured within a few hours of using the boat on the water. I brought it back to US Engine and they claimed to find and fix the problem again. On July 4th weekend I used the boat again on the water and the same thing happened again. Massive oil leaks with minutes this time around. I brought it back to US Engines who once again claimed to find the problem and fix it after weeks in their shop. I used the boat again in August and the same problem happend again within hours of use. They kept the boat well into September and claimed they found the problem and throughly tested the engine on the lake during a water test without any problems. During all of these repairs they blaimed the leaks on many different problems including: timing cover, holes that were found, fuel mixing with the oil and seals. They even claimed to have put a different engine in my boat but the serial number remained the same on the block.
Since it was late September when they finished repairs I had them winterize the boat. Also in 2011 while the boat was in their shop they managed to break off the key in the ignition, break off my throttle, leave wires exposed to melt and overheat on the engine which caused the electrical system to shut down. They did not replace parts such as my exhaust shutters and screws that hold the engine compartment in place. Worst mechanics I have ever delt with.
In April of 2012 I had the engine dewinterized by I-90 Marnie who is a Mercury Certified Dealer in Issaquah, WA. I asked them to look over the engine and all systems for the boating season. They told me the engine was a very old block style from the 1990s. They felt the engine was out of alignment, it had non-reccommended oil filter and the lower belt drive had a wobble. I took the boat out the 1st weekend in May and the engine dumped the oil again within 30 minutes of use. I complained to US Engine and I told them I will not bring my boat back to them due to the unprofessional work done in 2011. They referred me to Lake Washington Boat Center in Auburn, WA. I agreed to left them try to fix the oil leak issue. They had the boat for 2 days and claim to find the problem (hold under the timing cover) and that it was fixed. We tried the boat again and it dumped the oil within 5 minutes of use on the water. My girlfriend did extensive online research and found that Lake Washington Boat Center owns US Engines and Mike Crossan is the CEO. At first they denied that Lake Washington Boat Center was affiliated with US Engine.
I contacted Mercury Marine and a certified master mechanic who confirmed this is a faulty engine and shotty work. A rebuilt engine should last 7 to 10 years without any oil leaks according to Mecury Marine. I requested a refund of the total purchase price of $6,440 from Mike Crossan. He agreed to apply the refund to a new rebuilt engine from Mercury Marine. However, when I received the quote it was only a partial refund and he was overcharging for the new engine compaired to quotes I received for the same engine from I-90 Marine and Lake Union Sea Ray. Mike wants a total of $14,130 from me. I could purchase a new engine somewhere else for for around $10k. I let Mike know his quote was unacceptable and he stated he can't help me out any further.
I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They have responded to the complaint that the parts that are leaking oil are from my old parts and not their rebuilt engine. They stated it is the oil pan from my 10 year old engine. Also they claim my alarm and oil pressure gauge are faulty. I responded I paid for a new rebuilt engine not an engine that is pieced together with old parts. I confirmed with Mercury Marine and rebuilt engine should never include old parts from the engine that is being replaced. Only peripheral parts such as a starter should be utilized from the existing engine. Nothing that may cause oil leaks. I belive that using old parts on a advertised new rebuilt engine is fraud. They also responded to the BBB that the engine was overfilled with too much oil by myself which caused the leaks from the pan. I have never overfilled the engine. I have only added a couple of quarts after the engine has dumped the oil so I could get the oil pressure up enough to limped back to the dock.
I-90 Marine found nothing wrong with my oil pressure gauge or alarm wiring. The BBB has 33 complaint cases against US Engines in the past 3 years for problems with product/Service and Guarantee/Warranty Issues.
During online research my girlfriend also discovered Lake Washington Boat Center/US Engine has changed their business licence and legal name 9 times. They have opperated under the names: Lake Washington Boat Center, US Engine and Import Engines inc., US Mortors inc., Lake Washington Boat inc., Lake Washington Boats, US Engines Corp., US Engines inc., US Engine, and US Marine and Domestic Engines inc. She also found 35 plus negative reviews on most of these business names on: yelp, complaintboard.com, iboat.com, merchantcircle.com, complaints.com, complaintsboard.com, rifoffreport.com, citysearch.com and pissedconsumer.com
Most of these complaints and stories are simular to mine. Faulty engines and oil leak problems. Charlie from US Engines has commented back to many of these complaints with the same response: "Not our Fault" and blamed the problem on the consumer.
I agree with many of the statements in consumer online complaints. This business is fraudulent, unethical and scam artists. One complaint even stated "The owner should be in jail."
We also found 30 Superior Court Cases against US Engine since 2000 and 6 District Cases. We are now researching the nature of these lawsuits and the outcomes.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS VERY FRAUDULENT OPERATION.
