We purchased a Toshiba laptop computer from Best Buys in Plattsburgh, NY 12901 for a graduation present on 6/05/2011 and the gift was put away until 6/22/2011 (the date of graduation).
When the computer was unwrapped it failed to function properly as the screen had some damage in the seam where the pieces are fused together. I never saw the damage personally, but the service people tell me this is so. I was told to return it to Best Buy which gives you 14 days of return and replacement, but not from the day of unwrapping, but from the date of purchase.
They refused to assist us in this and told me to contact Toshiba as they have a year warranty on their products. I called and was instructed to send them $24.95 for a return mailer box and was told the item would be repaired or replaced based on our phone conversation.
I mailed the item and was later called and told the repair would cost $325 for this item. They don't warranty screen breakage even if it was a fault of the item during the initial warranty time. Why did they make me invest another $24.95 for nothing. They are currently sending the unit back, but it is virtually useless. Best Buys tells me it should have been handled differently and they are sorry that there is nothing they can do. I don't believe this. I dealt with them in good faith and I feel that one or the other should repair or replace this item and return it to the condition and functionality that we paid for. Thanks for any assistance you can provide me with this matter. It is now more a matter of principle than economics. I have done business with Toshiba and have purchased 7 laptop units from them over the years with never a problem and now this....
