I am wanting to order a container of copy paper to resell in our store. I put a request in on Alibaba. I received email from Josep Gay of Paper N Pulp in Thailand offering me a very good price on paper. He was very believable and could "talk the talk". He even sent me company business documents when I requested them. They looked very authentic, and since I can't read Thai, I assumed they were real. After receiving my money, he sent me a fake BL (Bill of Lading). When I complained, he sent another one. I was able to track a ship with this number, but not my container. I complained again and he sent a third BL. Again, no tracking ability. I started checking the shipping company, receiving port, etc. Each and every check pointed to fraud. When I started emailing him on these issues, he waited a few days, then his "wife" sent me an email saying he was in the hospital, "fighting for his life". "She" also said he was going to sue the shipping company and would refund my money to me. I responded to that first email, asking what hospital was he in. She refused that information, saying doctor's orders. I have received two more emails from "her" and have ignored them. About two weeks later, I saw where he has had a miraculous recovery & is back at work. But, now he is in Orlando, Florida. Even more unfortunately, I set a business associate up with this fraud, and he lost more money than I did. I have learned a lot from this experience, and now verify all documents these "people" send to me. I also check out their email location, website, etc.

I have a check list of about 10-12 items that a supplier should pass before giving any money to them. I have, so far, been one step ahead of two other suppliers of copy paper that on the surface looked legit, and have discovered they were fakes before sending any money.

These people are good. They know their business. But, there are ways to protect yourself, but you have to know what to look for.
