I applied to an ad for a Receptionist job on Craigslist. The ad stated they were a family-owned company celebrating their 104th anniversary. The position supposedly paid $20-$25 an hour, but they still required the applicant's salary history and salary expectations. I answered the ad and got this reply from Next Net Inc:

"Thanks for your reply to our employment posting on Craigslist. Our company is a young company in expansion and we are looking to build an determined and eager group. We are especially interested in your submission. Our HR director requires that your resume be sent via the most well-liked on-line career network for reliability and easier tracking. This is a no cost service to all applicants.

Please up load your resume Here.

We look forward to looking at your resume and discussing your possible employment with our company. Please e-mail me and let me know when your resume is submitted.

Thanks,
Allison Thomas HR Assistant"

I didn't put the 2 together at the time, but looking back, it's odd how the company went from being 104 years old to being a "young company in expansion." The site they linked to was Job.com- a site at which I had already uploaded a resume. I Googled Next Net Inc and found nothing, but I answered them anyway and received a second reply, this time from a different email address, [email protected]:

"Hello,

We have reviewed over 15 applications and we have narrowed our selection down to five. Good news, You are one of the applicants we would like to interview by the end of next week!

Qualifications: Excellent written and oral communication skills to perform general administrative duties including answering phones and taking messages, preparing mailings, and ordering supplies. We will give more specific details at the interview.
Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Pay: $13 - $16 an hour
Benefits Package: Medical, dental, disability/life insurance, flex medical spending plan, vacation/sick days and 401K

The position will require you to work in a high financial environment so it's our corporate policy that we do a financial verification check on all employees to verify applicant registration info. Its corporate policy that we have applicants sent through our link so we are compliant with the U.S employment standards act. Please copy and paste this link into your browser and complete the free report now: http://submit-it.info?id=77ba8e4d3f Fill out the form and indicate that you want the free report. PLEASE DO NOT email us your report. Instead print it out and bring a copy to the interview as we will need to have it on file. Since this is just a pre-screen formality your actual score will not affect your chances of being hired. Please take a few minutes to do this now.

After completing the score report please reply stating:
-The best time for us to hold the interview. Morning (8-12) or evening (1-5)
-The account reference number you received after you completed the credit check (we will cross-check with our records at the interview).

I will call and confirm your interview upon completion of the above.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Taylor
Human Resources"

At this point, I knew it was a scam; not only did they want my financial background, but the pay dropped from $20-$25 to $13-$16 and the company email had changed. So I chose to ignore the message and never filled out the credit report. The next day I got a third email, this time from GRX Management:

"Hi Nikki,

We appreciate you e-mailing us and making the time to send your resume. In case the job listing wasn't understandable, the duties of this available position are as follows:

- Employees will be answering phone calls and logging messages when applicable.
- Employees will be preparing the corporation group meetings, and running errands for the company for equipment such as buying supplies and making bank deposits (you will be supplied a company car during business hours).
- While you are running errands, you will furthermore be supplied use of one of our company debit cards for all company needs.

You seem more than certified for our available position and more so than the additional 22 applicants we received resumes from. I am interested in taking the next stage with you. However, before I am able to schedule a finishing interview, my company will expect that you attain a recent (past 30 days) credit score. We have begun doing this because regrettably we have had numerous bad incidents with previous employees taking advantage of having access to our company debit cards.

Both the Human Resources division and myself prefer that all applicants use This Site to attain your score as this site offers the check at no charge for the score (unlike other sites). Our company also discovered that this websites scores consistently report back the most exact and correct information, and they are the most consistent trusted sources on line.

As soon as you submit the requested information, the website will offer to you your unobjective score. Then, you are asked to e-mail me the requested credit score, a phone number that you can be contacted, and your availability schedule to coordinate an interview. I ask you to not e-mail me the entire report, as it will have confidential subject matter. If you supply a poorer than anticipated credit score, it will by no means stop you from attaining a job with us. I had a quite poor score when I began working here and I never had any problems. If you don't want to complete a recent credit score, regrettably our company will require that I move on to my second choice.

For myself, I want to fill this vacancy with a new friendly face and I look forward to your quick reply.

Have a terrific Monday.
Thank you,
HR Assistant"

Funny how the number of applicants went from 15 to 22 in barely 24 hours. This time I replied to the email stating that I did not feel comfortable giving my credit information to a company before being hired and that I would be pursuing different avenues. They have yet to reply.
