CIEE offers teach abroad programs to teach English in foreign countries. They promise a good working condition with a reputable institution, health benefits and a 30 hour work week. You pay them to find you a position and process your Visa. Once you are placed overseas they will not help you if you have any problems. I was sent to a school that did not pay me what I was promised and illegally paid me under the table. I never received my health benefits, and my work week was actually 40 hours for the base pay promised not 30 hours. I was required to work weekends without pay. I tried to get help to find a better situation and received threats claiming that my bank account would be seized and I would be reported to the police if I tried to quit. I ended up having to close my bank account during my lunch break and then flee the country in the middle of the night to avoid economic and legal actions being taken against me. The school called the police on me when I did not show up to work, how is that OK? CIEE will take your money, find you a school, and that school can treat you any way they want. The school forced me to work against my will for less pay and no benefits, and no way to quit. Avoid this company, if you wish to teach abroad contact the schools directly and do not waste your time or money with this company. Nothing they promise is provided and they are still working with the school that did this to me, which means you could be sent into this same situation. They knowingly work with schools that will abuse you thinking that you can do nothing about it. Avoid at all costs!!
