After filing for my college financial aid, a month later I received a bill from a company called Great Lakes claiming they were the lender of the student loan with a balance of $2750.37. When I went to the web site to check them out it directs you to log in and ask you for your social security number. Finding that very suspicious, I called the university to check on the amount I owed, and to verify the company who sent me the bill. They informed me that this company used to handle the loans but is now handled threw Direct Lending and also I should not have gotten a bill this soon anyway. Therefore this company is obviously posing under the name Great Lakes and is trying to SCAM you out of your identity and money!!

  • My student loans have been serviced by Great lakes a.k.a Mygreatlakes.org for some time now. They guided me through the process when I was not able to make my minimum payments and have kept me abreast via email, phone calls and other communications. I get my notices from the U.S. Department of Education reflecting that my payments have been credited to my account.
Student loans are a hot ticket item in the debt market. And students who actually make their payments make that note even more valuable. It would appear that someone jumped the gun in your case and the paperwork got into the market way too soon.
But I do know that this company has serviced my loans and a have credited my accounts with the U.S. Dept. of Education since they purchased the loans from the previous note holder.
I had previously been in default and had my tax returns taken. I made my nine payments and was put back in good standing (even got a letter from the U.S. Dept of Ed. to verify) and my tax return was freed.
So that is all I can write in their defense. I don't like having to pay it back, but that is my baggage. But they have done right by me.
