    • Choice Home Warranty Complaint / User Submitted Image #5793

I purchased a home warranty policy on February 17, 2011. On March 31, I plugged a fairly new, portable electric heater into an outlet in my bathroom that had nothing else plugged into it. I have used the heater on several occasions in several rooms with no problem.

The heater blew a fuse and the GFCI outlet in the garage. I attempted to reset the fuse and GFCI, but it would not work. I submitted a claim to the company on March 31, 2011. On Friday, I got a call from XX Electric (Jo). He left a message about coming out to repair. I called back and left him a message that I would be out of town for almost week and would get in touch with him when I returned home the following week. When I called him, he informed me that he was on vacation and not available until the next week. He finally got two technicians over the following week and they made a diagnosis on the problem. I was without electricity for 4 weeks.

I was informed by thier representative that the claim had been denied. I was told at one point that it was INAPPROPRIATE USE OF AN APPLIANCE. That is not true. I simply plugged a legal, residential heater into a plug with nothing else plugged into it. Then I was told by their representative that it was because of a power surge and therefore not covered. That also is not true. I sated that there may have been too many things on the same circuit and the representative twisted my words and claimed that I said there were too many things plugged in. There was one small heater plugged into one outlet. I have no idea how many outlets are on the same circuit, which is what I suggested could be the problem.
The insurance company never did pay or refund my premiums. I wrote to the Insurance Commission of California and was told that they could not help because the warranty company is not licensed to sell insurance in California!
